      <image:title>Capacity Building - Access Health NYC - Affecting Change</image:title>
<image:caption>Mariam has been a client of Sapna NYC for about a year. She first started in Sapna’s English classes, and soon became a part of an action group on lead poisoning. As part of this action group, Mariam was tasked with learning about lead poisoning and how to become a leader in her community by conducting health outreach. Mariam worked in the group to create materials, distribute flyers, and conduct presentations on lead poisoning. Mariam also benefited personally from her work at Sapna NYC. After learning that several common South Asian ingredients contain lead, Mariam went to her primary care physician to get tested for lead. Her doctor was reluctant since the tests were done mostly on children, but Mariam insisted on receiving the test and eventually found out her blood lead was elevated. She was also able to make changes at home to reduce both her risk and her son’s risk of lead poisoning, including reducing the use of certain ingredients in her cooking, and by calling 311 to have her landlord test for lead when she was moving. — Mariam, Client of Sapna NYC</image:caption>

<image:caption>Chander is a 79-year-old South Asian immigrant who joined the senior program at South Asian Council for Social Services (SACSS) and became a volunteer at the food pantry. At SACSS she had the opportunity to listen to presentations from doctors on health issues related to seniors such as Alzheimer's and memory loss and falls prevention among others. SACSS has also been able to help Chander understand how her insurance works. “The health outreach team at SACCS showed me the difference between the new and old Medicare cards. They are a great help for the older people, and I really appreciate them.” — Chandler, Client of South Asian Council for Social Services</image:caption>

We take pride and joy in helping 47 survivors get trafficking visas, many of them are domestic workers. 31 of these survivors successfully reunified their families and brought 60 children and 17 spouses to our communities in Queens.” — Linda Oalican, Executive Director, Damayan Migrant Workers Association</image:caption>

<image:caption>“The Coalition for Asian American Children and Families is excited to continue to work with the New York State of Health through the In-Person Assistor/Navigator program. As a lead organization, CACF recognizes the incredible impact Patient Navigators have on the healthcare system and their ability to create healthier communities. Nearly 45% of the Asian Pacific American community speaks little to no English. Linguistically and culturally competent Patient Navigators can serve our APA communities better and meet the needs of community members of linguistically isolated groups. We are proud to help provide access to services and to communities including Arab American, Bangladeshi, Cambodian, Chinese, Indian, Japanese, Korean, Nepali, Tibetan, Vietnamese and more.” — Anita Gundanna, Co-Executive Director, CACF</image:caption>

As our community remains at risk for a disproportionate burden of preventable diseases in the United States, it is crucial we provide better access to health information, screenings and care. Through this partnership, we are able to make a measurable impact for hundreds of members of the community with an innovative, grassroots approach available in multiple languages that cater to historically underserved populations at gurdwaras, schools, community centers and our local office.“ — Hardayal Singh, Founding Member, UNITED SIKHS</image:caption>

<image:caption>“I joined ASAP because I wanted to connect more with my half-Asian identity and use it as a strength to positively impact all communities in NYC, starting with the APA community. Through advocacy work in ASAP, I learned about the power we have as youth to create positive change. ASAP exposes us to environments with powerful people who are still willing to listen to our experiences and ideas. I also learned about the gaps between the APA community and other communities of color, which was significant to me because I always felt tensions between minorities, but never had the language and platform to discuss it.” — Nada Alnagar, ASAP Cohorts 2017-2020</image:caption>

However, this experience has brought me to the conclusion that our goal is to expand opportunities that contribute to the conversation on equity for everyone. ASAP has taught me so much about how to be conscious about people’s experiences and how they differ, even within the APA community, which I am glad to have learned as it goes beyond the generalizations that society makes.” — Anna Lu, ASAP Cohorts 2018-2020</image:caption>

<image:title>Policy/Advocacy - APA Education Equity Campaign - The Value in Holistic Learning “Leading up to 2019, school segregation has sharpened with the onslaught of weight placed on specialized exams. While levels of access and privilege undeniably exist and have increased in some Asian/South Asian communities in New York, the intensified pressure spreads to even working-class communities. A culture has long been cultivated where success and opportunity are measured and projected by standardized metrics. When education and opportunity rely so heavily on test taking, then inevitably, an entire market on private tutoring services flourish and as a society, we lose sight of the value in holistic learning. Effectively other students of color, particularly black students, are excluded from the same opportunities as their peers and the odds are further stacked against them.”</image:title>

<image:title>Policy/Advocacy - APA Education Equity Campaign - Healthier Learning Environment</image:title>
<image:caption>“As APAs, we are constantly fighting the harmful impacts of the model minority myth, which prevents our needs from being recognized and understood, but also is used as a wedge to continue to pit minority groups against each other and justify the inequitable distribution of resources and opportunities across communities. Recent studies on diversity and inclusivity in education show that a more representative and diverse body of peers cultivates an increasingly positive and healthier learning environment. Racial diversity in school settings fosters better implementation of policies that improve academic achievement and intergroup engagement, and brings about positive long-term social outcomes. Immersing students in an environment with others from backgrounds and with experiences different from themselves has been shown to improve cognitive skills such as critical thinking and problem-solving.” — Testimony by Tasfia Rahman, former CACF Policy Coordinator</image:caption>

<image:title>Policy/Advocacy - APA Education Equity Campaign - Access to Resources and Opportunities</image:title>
<image:caption>“I’d like the people, who think that all APA’s are thriving in this system, to meet my friends, who have been condemned to the label of “bad Asian.” I’d like them to meet my friends, who feel disengaged with academics and prefer to play ball, but at the park, not their underfunded schools. I’d like them to see the glasses shattering in families over a report card, on top of frozen pizza dinners, and the stress of essential work during this time. See how it feels to be rejected by the city and your community at the same time by ignoring factors like language access, poverty, and mental health. The APA community is complicated and diverse. There are those who reject integration, for fear that something will be taken away from them or their children. But what makes a child more any more entitled to a quality education than another? The APA community itself is rife with inequities, colorism, and anti-Blackness. Yet among the flurry of ignorant, accusatory voices, we are here and committed to working with our fellow students of color, immigrant students, and marginalized students for equitable access to resources and opportunities because, truthfully, we need it too.” — Testimony by ASAP Student Leader</image:caption>

But as advocates, we know that there is precedent for this work in other States and localities, and we have been open in our willingness to work with the State on this.
