Immigrant Social Services Hosts A Virtual Fireside Chat with Qian Julie Wang

CACF member Immigrant Social Services is hosting a Virtual Fireside Chat with acclaimed author Qian Julie Wang.

Please join us for a virtual chat with the author Qian Julie Wang of The New York Times Bestseller, Beautiful Country: A Memoir, on Tuesday, May 17, 2022 at 8:30pm! Thanks to a special sponsorship with our community partner Yu+Me Books, one attendee will win a signed copy of the book!

UA3 and OCA-NY present “Illegal”

CACF partners OCA-NY and UA3 are continuing the celebration of AAPI voices by bringing Illegal: A New Musical - a rap-rock musical about the Chinese Exclusion Act and AAPI history - to Chinatown/LES at P.S. 130 at 143 Baxter Street, NYC on Friday, June 17, 2022.

Skyler Chin is the Creator and Sita Sunil, the Co-Composer, and they recently performed a full-length (90-minutes) version of this musical for 1200 people in Manhasset on Long Island. They were commended by Congresswoman Grace Meng for responding to the rise of Asian Hate throughout NYC and America.

This musical concert performance seeks to respond to pandemic-era anti-Asian racism with positive narratives by and about AAPI individuals, emphasizing perseverance, solidarity, and hope. Please note that the June 17th music performance will be 60-minutes long with selections from Illegal.

Featuring performances by Honorary Guest Eva Noblezada and Brooklyn Raga Massive

Eva Noblezada, two-time Tony nominated and Grammy winning actor and singer, played the lead for director Diane Paragas in the acclaimed Sony Pictures film, Yellow Rose. She’ll next be seen in Amblin’s upcoming Easter Sunday and AppleTV+'s animated film Luck. She won a Grammy and was nominated for a Tony Award for starring on Broadway in Hadestown. It was the second Tony nomination in her first two Broadway roles, following her earlier nod in the title role in Miss Saigon in 2017. She previously starred in Hadestown at the National Theatre in London after being a lead in the West End revivals of Miss Saigon and Les Miserables. She received an Imagen Award nomination for her recent role on Law & Order: SVU. Noblezada was a high school student when she was discovered by casting director Tara Rubin at the 2013 Jimmy Awards in NYC.

Brooklyn Raga Massive (BRM) is a prolific artist collective dedicated to creating cross-cultural understanding through the lens of South Asian classical music. BRM preserves and expands this rich genre, provides direct support to musicians, and facilitates cultural exchange through performances, new compositions, and educational programs.

Raga-inspired music of any genre is fluid, colorful, and highly improvisational, requiring deep listening and respect between musicians. BRM aims to leverage these values of openness, generosity, humility, and respect for tradition to cultivate genuine connections between artists and audiences of all backgrounds.
